Following the renovation of their guest suites, the hotel contacted Trapezoid Interior Design to discuss renovations to their lobby. Knowing that they only get one chance to make a first impression on their guests, the client wanted something special for this part of their $20 million refurbishment.
The brief involved creating a contemporary lobby worthy of a busy 4 star city hotel. This included new internal floor, wall and ceiling finishes, updated reception counter, new concierge counter, updated driveway, new exterior ceiling and wall linings and lighting, and the installation of a new café with dedicated entry (see “The Vard” under Cafes and Takeaway).
A neutral colour scheme was agreed upon with finishes including granite, wool carpets, timber veneer, Seratone and aluminium.
The existing marble reception counter was in good condition but needed a new look. The seven metre long block was broken up into 4 stations, each identified by a timber veneer element attached to the top and front of the counter. The veneer panels were offset from the existing marble, allowing concealed lighting to be installed on the underside, illuminating the marble counter and floor below.
A black and white photograph of the city skyline was commissioned and taken from the top floor of the hotel. The image was mounted under acrylic and installed to the full extent of the wall behind the reception counter. The stunning image illustrates the views available from rooms on the north side of the hotel and from the 25th floor restaurant, providing both an attractive decorative element and a compelling sales tool.
Two raised floor areas allocated to the lounge and café were lowered to meet the main lobby floor level. This meant that the whole area became accessible, and dramatically increased the feeling of space.
Custom made aluminium lights were installed along the glazed William and Crown Street perimeter. Previously, where busy pedestrian and vehicle traffic saw only the tinted glass façade, they now see the glow of light beyond. This gives the lobby more presence and personality at the street front.

The exterior lobby ceiling was replaced and new lighting installed. Existing curved “wings” around the revolving doors were clad in aluminium composite panel providing a more elegant finish than the previous white painted finish. Black granite was used internally and externally to dress walls, floor junctions, plinths and water features (converted from former planter boxes).

Trapezoid designed a new concierge counter with a curved form built from timber veneer, black granite, Seratone and stainless steel. Concealed lighting creates a warm glow on the reflective Seratone and steel finishes making the unit welcoming and easy to locate.
The existing lift lobby was modified by removing part of the outdated decorative marble capping to provide clean, modern lines, and installing new Seratone cladding with smart aluminium detailing.
The overall effect of this refurbishment is an elegant, up-to-date lobby with welcoming finishes and stylish accents.
